We built a six hundred square foot deck with wrapped CMU concrete footings, doors and windows and recessed lighting out here, plus a ground-up gazebo with a custom barbecue, stone post wraps and a tongue-and-groove ceiling. Both jobs came out of the same thing: big two-story homes on lots with a lot of unused paved area behind them.

Rancho San Diego is mostly 1980s and 1990s construction, stucco and tile roof, with back yards that were finished with hardscape and then left. Adding a covered structure and an outdoor kitchen to that kind of yard changes it more dramatically than almost any interior project would, and it costs less than most people assume.

Being further inland and east, sun exposure here is serious. Roof material and ceiling detail matter, and so does where the structure sits relative to the afternoon.
