Decks
Deck Builder in San Diego County
Half the lots in North County drop away behind the house, and most of that ground is doing nothing for you. A deck is how you get it back. Built right, it is the flattest and most-used part of your property within a week of finishing. Most of what decides that is buried in the parts you stop being able to see on day three.
01The Scope
The parts of a deck you will never see again
Footings first, sized to the span and the soil, poured and inspected. On the hillside lots around Rancho Bernardo and La Jolla that often means deeper piers and wrapped CMU columns rather than a standard pad. Then a framed structure with proper joist spacing, hangers where hangers belong, positive connections into the house rather than a ledger nailed to stucco, and flashing that keeps water out of your rim joist for the next thirty years.
Only after that comes the part you look at. Redwood, cedar, or composite, laid with consistent gaps and hidden fasteners where the material allows. Stairs with treads that are all the same height, because the one that is not is the one someone catches a toe on. Railing that meets code for height and spacing and still looks like it belongs to your house, whether that means cable, black metal, or wood.
Then the things that decide whether you use it after sunset: recessed step and post lighting on its own circuit, outlets, and a landing that lands where you actually walk out of the house.

Different properties, same standard.

03Timeline
Two to five weeks depending on elevation and footing depth. Hillside decks with deep piers take longer at the start and no longer at the end.
04Typical Investment
Height off grade is the biggest driver, because it decides your footing depth, your post size, and whether you need engineering. After that it is decking material and railing. Redwood, cedar, and composite are three different numbers, and we will tell you which one is worth it for your exposure.
Every estimate is written for your exact house and scope, free, after a walkthrough. We will go through the numbers with you.
