Rancho Bernardo is where two of the projects we are proudest of live: a ground-up deck and pavilion with concrete footings, framing, finish carpentry and electrical, and a full patio overhang with post wraps, a tongue-and-groove ceiling, recessed lighting and roofing tied into the existing house.

The neighborhood suits that work. Homes here are largely 1970s through 1990s, single-story and low-slung, on lots with mature landscaping and often a golf course or open space behind them. The back of the house is the good side, and most of these homes were built with almost nothing protecting it.

The other thing worth knowing about Rancho Bernardo is the ceiling. On a low-pitch roof, a patio structure has to tie in at a height that works without making the back of the house look bolted onto. Getting that tie-in right is the difference between a cover and an addition that happens to be open on three sides.
